The Petzval air-spaced quintuplet optics correct field curvature across a 45 mm usable image circle, so many full-frame cameras can be used without a separate field flattener. That simplifies the imaging train and helps keep stars sharp to the frame edge on large sensors.
With a 365 mm focal length and an f/4.8 focal ratio, the 76SAP gathers light quickly for brighter frames and shorter integration times compared with slower refractors. The compact focal length also gives a wide field of view that suits large nebulae and star fields.
